David from the British Council dropped in on a surprise last week. It baffles the children, who stared at him in complete awe as he reeled off Thai phrases. I learnt more about the programme, the careful balancing of everyone's expectations and the day to day tasks of managing 180 plus under 25 year olds as they tackle teaching English in rural Thailand. It's odd speaking fluently at school when often I'm parceling pigeon phrases of English to the children and attempting clunky Thai with the teachers. He sits in on my primary two class who decide today is the day to forget all our previous lessons, attempt to stab each other with pins and run round the classroom looking dazed. Still he's kind enough to compliment the lesson and I feel proud getting the chance to show him round my school and introduce him to my students and our hard working teachers.
