In my last couple of weeks I wanted to make an effort to note down a few of my favourite things that I don't want to forget. So to start...
a few of my favourite foods ....
Som tam teng: Cucumber salad dressed with a soy sauce, fish sauce, chilli and sugar dressing and topped with peanuts. Delicious but occasionally very spicy. There are lots of different varieties of som tham, a lot of them served with sea food, and it's a very popular dish.
Ki-giow: Omelet but fried in a lot of oil so that it puffs up in the pan making it extra light and crispy.
Moo gra-tat: Is cooked by you at the table on a hot plate surrounded by a moat of stock. You fry the meat on the centre, fill the stock with cabbage and noddles and eat as and when it's cooked. Takes a bit of getting used to piling up plates of raw meat from a counter and expertly using chopsticks to fry both sides, but it's definitely worth it.
Mat prow kowa: Dry-fried desiccated coconut with chili, curry powder, corn and prawns. Really nutty and spicy.
Cow-thom: Thai porridge. Rice boiled in stock until it turns into a soft soupy consistency, with soft boiled pork, egg, lemon grass and parsley. Not spicy at all, really comforting and makes a welcome change from the stodgy rice in the mornings.
A few tasty snacks:
All of the fruit here (asides from Durian) is worth a try. Rambutan's (a bit like lychees) are
Corn on the cob: steamed and then dipped in a sweet and salty water. So delicious and refreshing.
Roti: Mini pancakes folded and filled with cream and sweet toppings
Crepes: Folded and filled with sweet syrups and a popular Thai addition of sugar pulled pork. Sweet and sour to taste.
Pork Dumplings: Served with sweet chilli sauce.
Coconut water: From the actual coconut, and sold it lots of stores in a bottle.
Kaffee Yen: Incredibly sweet ice coffee and incredibly addictive. I'm definitely going to need to stop by the dentist when I get home.
